How to pierce the darkness until it releases the light… Building unity is an important role of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life. Without the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, finding peace cannot be achieved. You cannot have one without the other. Darkness produces chaos where the Holy Spirit brings forth light!

Ephesians 4:3
New International Version
3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Who here needs a little peace today? Yesterday? Tomorrow? I think the Apostle Paul must have known what a peaceless life was like! But did he? At first glance, it seems as though he was the most picked upon Christian leader in the New Testament of the Bible. And yet he had peace in the midst of all the chaos in his life. Paul knew how to Pierce the darkness until it releases the Light in his situation, life, and ministry. But how did he do it?

Unity and Maturity in the Body of Christ

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:1-6

How did Paul pierce the darkness until it releases the light?

  1. Paul allowed himself to be led by the Spirit of God – There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called. Ephesians 4:4
  2. He focused on God rather than his physical, mental, and emotional pain – When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed. Acts 20:36
  3. He prayed and thanked God for giving him the strength to lead – I thank Christ Jesus, our Lord, who has given me strength to do His work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve Him. 1 Timothy 1:12
  4. Paul was a humble, gentle, patient, and loving man of God – Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2
  5. He followed Jesus’ example of unity with the Father and Holy Spirit so he could bring peace to the body of Christ – Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:3

How do we keep the unity of the Spirit?

So how do we keep the unity of the Spirit for that extra slice of peace in our lives each day? We start by allowing ourselves to be led by the Spirit of God. Next, we focus on God rather than our circumstances and needs. In addition, we pray that He would give us His strength and attitude. Above all, we keep the Spirit’s unity by making every effort to be peacemakers and peacekeepers!

This can be done with the Holy Spirits’ help by praying every day. In conclusion, let’s pray to help you find the unity and peace you are searching for today!

Holy Spirit, we pray that You would bring unity and fellowship in every relationship we have. Remove the walls that have been erected and are not beneficial to the growth of those relationships. Provide love where there has been disunity. Surround us with Your peace in every circumstance we face. May You be glorified in each of those relationships. In Your name, amen.
