The Lord is my portion. As I sit and drink my coffee each morning, I am reminded that I should focus on the Word of God and prayer. I am not sure how you are doing, but I am so tired as I keep focusing on all the negativity.

Looking in the Wrong Place

What I am wrestling with is overwhelming at times, but I know God is faithful because God’s compassions never fail! When Covid-19 hit, I found myself glued to the television morning, noon, and night. Looking back now, I realize I was looking for answers but looking in the wrong place.

Hitting Pause

As I clicked from channel to channel, it all looked and sounded hopeless and bleak. After a while, I found that I couldn’t do it anymore. Why was I tuning in only to feel depressed and afraid? At first, I was drawn to it just as a moth is to a flame. Why didn’t I realize I had a choice? All the negativity was frying my brain and my emotions. So I hit pause!

Change the Channel

Once I recognized the adverse effect the news had on my mind and home, I changed the channel to something better. Before I did, I noticed it was causing division between my family and me. I needed to move on and fast! With the change, the whole atmosphere in my house was better; it was positive.

Why did it take so long to see that what we were doing wasn’t working? Looking back, I would imagine we had been focusing on the negativity for way too long. Isn’t that what we have all been doing as a culture? We are consumed by it and don’t even realize it!

A Bad Diet

It’s like a bad diet we can’t seem to get enough of. But why? It doesn’t even taste good. It certainly isn’t satisfying. Do we know there is something better? Once I made the change, it took me a little while, but I started re-engaging with God regularly. The free time allowed me to be more consistent with reading my Bible. It also encouraged me to start listening to worship music again. It was a win-win situation; I did things I love more often!

The Lord is my Portion

None of us need to keep consuming what isn’t working. We can change the menu. God’s word reminds us that His Love is the ingredient we need. We have all we need because He is our portion. Want to join me and choose something healthier?
